The New Canadian Struggle

The story of Nina Banker is one that is very familiar to new Canadians. A highly trained Physician and teacher in her own country, Nina’s decision to come to Canada was fuelled by the prospect of a better life for her children. This set her off on a journey full of hope, as her immigration consultant described to her a “land of opportunity, where the sky is the limit.” Upon a successful application to Canada, she and her husband were given entry as skilled immigrants and told that with their skills there would be a rich job market awaiting them.

Caring for the elderly, injured or infirm is no easy task. Personally caring for someone requires time, yes; patience, in abundance; but most importantly, a certain character – strong, compassionate, and caring. Personal support workers are different in their services in healthcare than doctors, nurses, and other regulated healthcare professions. They address the personal daily needs of a person who cannot do on their own, for reasons related to age, injury, or illness, and given Canada’s recent population trends, their qualifications are greatly desired.
